Regional Officer’s Report

Christine Royle

I hope you have all had a successful year with your classes and are now ready to begin a new term.

I would like to congratulate all those students who have successfully completed their BWY teacher training. Although a long time training

it is well worth it to feel proud and able to say ‘I am a BWY teacher’ fully insured, well-trained, and giving your students confidence that they are in safe and capable hands.

We have two major events left this year. The Mini Congress / AGM – details are again in the centre pull-out section. The cost for the day is a bargain considering you have a full day of excellent local tutors. We don’t have to look outside our region for tutors when we have such talent of our own. Do support your region by attending and also join in the AGM to have your vote and meet with the hardworking Committee who represent you.

I did make a plea in the last issue for anyone to consider taking on the role of treasurer. As of yet no-one has come forward. A nomination forms is in this issue; you don’t have to be a qualified accountant to do the job as our present treasurer Pat Brown would give you all her help and support to get you started. Please put your name forward in time for the AGM on 9th October 2010 at Bebington Civic Centre.

Our second event is the Mind Body & Spirit Festival at Manchester Central (GMEX) from Friday 19th November to Sunday 21st 2010. Do come along - this will be a major

profile for the BWY nationally. Central Office have paid for a big stand and we shall have a tutor teaching yoga on the stand and giving help and advice to clients, plus stage performances on Friday at 4.00 pm, Saturday at 4.30 pm, and Sunday at 11.00 am.

It is a great day out, with lots of interesting stalls where you can stock up on yoga items, CDs, books, and some Christmas presents with it being only a month away!

See page 31 for more details.

A reminder to teachers to register your CPD points online by the end of the calendar year. Debbie Fraser-Lewis, our then Regional Training Officer, gave easy to follow instructions on how to do it in the last newsletter, and we have repeated them in this issue on page 18.

Lastly, I would like to mention that I got married to Des Marsom on 10th July 2010. It was a lovely day and I arrived at Sale Town Hall in a big American yellow Cadillac complete with the driver Les, a friend of Des’s from the music business, dressed in the full traditional Rock & Roll Crepes and Drapes in pastel blue. I have included a couple of photos in this issue.

We would like to thank everyone for their cards and good wishes. The BWY Committee gave us a beautiful dusky pink sequined box to put all our memorabilia in. We certainly need it for all the cards alone as we had so many. My married name is Marsom, but I shall be keeping the Royle part for my yoga.

So I will now sign off as...

Christine Royle-Marsom

As the new editor of the BWY NorthWest newsletter and the point of contact for website changes, I would like to ask you all to consider getting more involved in the regional committee. I know that we are all busy but we came into yoga because we love it and hoped we could make a difference to our class members, and to ourselves. The committee does a fantastic job in organising seminars, IST and first aid training days and the AGM but new faces and fresh ideas are always welcome. Some key roles are due to become vacant. Perhaps you might consider stepping into the shoes of Christine or Sue? You would be able to shadow them for 12 months to really learn the role before stepping out on your own, so don't be concerned. If you want to know more, come along to the AGM in November. It is preceded by a seminar on the The Shoulder and Lower Back with Lesley Dyke. It should be a really interesting day and very informative. If you have any questions about joining the committee, please feel free to contact Sue or Christine. They would be happy to chat.

I hope to be able to keep the newsletter interesting and informative for a long time yet but I can only do that if you get your info to me timely. If you want to advertise or contribute to the next newsletter, due out in January 2012, please let me have the info in (preferably) word format by the 10th November at the latest. The next edition is to be printed at head office so I will have no leeway on timings. All the details about advertising can be found in your latest edition.

I hope to see some of you in November at the AGM. Remember, your committee needs YOU.

Hello everyone.

Would you consider volunteering on the BWY North West Committee? I have been doing some research recently into samskaras, the impressions that stay with us as a result of all our daily experiences and make up our conditioning. It struck me that my work on the Committee is an opportunity to create positive samskaras. Desikachar says that if we create positive samskaras, there is less energy for the negative ones we may have – fewer of our thoughts will go down the well-worn tracks that together lead to unhelpful repetitive behaviours. Being on the Committee helps me to reinforce good habits rather than bad ones. An example might be ringing back a student to match them with a yoga class in their area, rather than staying on the sofa with another chocolate biscuit! Perhaps you think I’m stretching a point, but I found it was interesting to put the Committee work in a yogic context. We need a lot of help on the Committee at the moment, and the more people who can offer some time, the more rewarding it will be for everyone. If we value good training days and events in the region, an informative regional newsletter, and officers who are on hand to answer queries from teachers and students, then we do need more involvement from members. Of course, not everyone is in a position to do voluntary work on a regular basis, or even as a one-off, but if you think you are able to offer any contribution, it would be fantastic.

Since the last newsletter, I have matched a lot of yoga students or prospective students to classes, and also helped find teachers for classes and events. It has been really enjoyable as all

the members I’ve contacted have been so helpful and enthusiastic. If you were one of these, thank you very much.

Please can I ask a favour of some teacher members? Can those of you who include me on regular publicity emails for events and retreats consider reducing the number they send me?

It’s very rare that enquirers ask me about these and I’m afraid I don’t have time to read them

all. Thank you.

All best wishes,

Katie

In my last report I told you that I had asked for at least one of the in-service training days in 2011 to be held further north from the Manchester conurbation to make attendance more accessible to Lancastrians north of the Ribble. Well arrangements for this are underway but we are now looking for a suitable venue. Please contact me if you know of a suitable and inexpensive venue near you. Email lizkenyonyoga@talktalk.net  or phone me 01706 214693.

Following on from training I would like to remind teachers that your CPD details for 2010 should now be recorded on the BWY website. In the Spring/Summer newsletter Devi, the then Regional Training officer, gave a comprehensive guide regarding how to do this. Changes to how we use this website are happening all the time and I was assured at the April Congress that very soon, if not by the time you receive this newsletter all teachers will be able to edit their own details.

Changes! Changes! When I was at school my Latin master exhorted us to translate ‘Times change and we change with them’, and so we do. But often change is difficult to deal with in everyday life. All the more important then is how we appreciate the things that do not, or should not change; for example how we treat each other, whether we react badly to a situation or remain contented with what life throws at us, how we should hold on to our integrity under pressure, search constantly for purity in our lives and take time to study ourselves. Does all this sound familiar? Yes, Patanjali gave us the perfect guide what to hold onto in our ever changing world. So I hope remembering this will help you cope as the Wheel and all its systems and relationships undergo important changes in the coming months. Enjoy the mellow days of autumn and spice them up with a visit to the Mini-Congress at Bebington. It may not be too late to book, check with Patricia Brown, her number is in the NW Region Committee list at the back of the newsletter.

Best wishes, Liz

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are having a good summer.

It seems a long time since spring when, after several years’ absence, I attended Congress.

It was good to meet up with some of you there. This year Congress was held for the first time at Warwick University (where it will also take place next year) over three very busy days in glorious April weather.

The campus was very big – more a village really (lots of opportunities to walk off the effects of the excellent catering!) and the facilities all excellent. Conference staff were really friendly and efficient and the accommodation was very good.

It had been difficult to choose which sessions to attend from the huge number and range of options and it would have been easy to spend a week or more with this group of tutors.

I was delighted with my final selection and speaking to other people who had all chosen differently everyone else was too! I think I concluded that there is still a lot to learn and a lot of inspirational and knowledgeable people to learn from and to learn alongside.

Congress provides a unique opportunity to experience the teaching of tutors from many disciplines and philosophies and from many geographical areas.

It is also an opportunity to meet with other students of yoga from all over the country and to learn alongside them. And it’s fun too! Congress 2011 will take place 8th – 10th April so, if you’re tempted, put those dates in your diary now.

In the meanwhile we have our very own British Wheel of Yoga North West Mini-Congress at Bebington on 9th October. The programme, tutor profiles and booking form were included in the summer edition of Yoga North West, and are repeated again in this edition.

The Annual General Meeting of the North West Region will be held from 3.30 – 4.30 pm on the same day immediately following the mini congress. This is when the officers and committee are elected and you have the opportunity to learn more about the work of the committee and vote for your representatives (or maybe nominate someone or be nominated for election yourself). So I do hope you will be able to stay on for your AGM.

The North West Region had a successful stand at the Retirement show at GMEX in March (see photos in the summer Spectrum NEWS section) and will we be exhibiting at GMEX again at the Northern Mind Body Spirit Festival 19th – 21st November.

Do visit the stand and say ‘Hello' and claim your free draw ticket if you come to the Festival over that weekend.

Finally, do remember to record your CPD online at www.bwy.org.uk  by the end of the calendar year. Debbie Fraser Lewis explained the procedure in the summer edition of Yoga North West (page 4) and it’s repeated in this edition on page 18.

Enjoy your yoga! I hope to meet up with you at one of the local events.

Hello,

Teaching yoga is such a privilege! If more people took time to find a way to

centre themselves and unite body, breath and mind, as we do with yoga, I

think the world would be a happier and more peaceful place.

I have been lucky to attend some yoga seminars with excellent tutors myself. It is difficult to find time in busy lives (and perhaps more difficult to find the money), but I can really recommend a few days at a residential yoga course. You have the benefits of the company, ‘time out’ from daily concerns, and time to go more deeply into yoga practice. As well as deepening our experience of what yoga can offer, it also gives space to take stock of our lives.

Do take advantage of the events organised by your Committee including the Mini-Congress

in October. It will be an opportunity to experience yoga with a range of tutors covering a wide variety of topics, as well as to meet friends and make new ones!

I am receiving enquiries for yoga for children and toddlers. Please update me if you teach children, especially if you teach toddlers. Also remember to keep your classes updated on our regional website. Rick Calligaro is the contact, and his contact details are on the back cover. It is still useful to let me know if you run specialist classes. Are you going to run training courses such as Diploma or Foundation Courses? You may know he details several months before they reach Spectrum or the Newsletter.

Enjoy your yoga! See you at Mini-Congress in October! Alison
